CaRIOca for a day I am delighted with this city. I am delighted with the lushly forested mountains, all wearing that fresh green colour that reminds of the Amazonia; with the graffiti painted walls; with the sound of the Cuíca(brazilian instrument) squeeking from every street corner; with the confusion of the overcrowded beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, all parasols stationed as near as possible to each other, covering all the free space that is left; with the sympathy and cheerfulness of the people, who celebrates life and continues on learning to improve; with the rhythm of samba that is felt in the air; with the smell of churrasco, all that perfectly seasoned grilled meat... There's no doubt why Rio de Janeiro is known as Cidade Maravilhosa, portuguese for marvellous city. This year definitely couldn't have started any better. Since my crew and I were to spend two nights in São Paulo there was enough time for a quick escape to Rio de Janeiro, a 39 minutes flight time from Congonhas Airport to Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont. We spent 24 hours in Rio and visited every spot that should be seen. So if you are also planning a short or even longer trip to this exotic city here are some tipps :). This was our itinerary : Fiquei encantada com esta cidade. Este foi o nosso itinerário: From Congonhas CGH to Santos Dumont SDU Since our crew hotel was quite far away from the bigger airport Guarulhos in São Paulo it was clear for my friends and me to depart from Congonhas, the smaller airport, which was only 20 minutes away by car. The flight was scheduled for 12:55pm and at half past one in the afternoon we landed in Rio de Janeiro, Santos Dumont. The carrier was Avianca (very attentive and nice service!) , but you can also fly with LATAM, Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras or GOL. São Paulo has three commercial airports: Guarulhos GRU, Congonhas CGH and Campo de Marte Airport MAE (the very first airport built in São Paulo). Therefore, you have three possibilities if you are departing from or arriving in São Paulo. For the return flight we took off from Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport GIG, mostly known as Galeão International Airport, which is the main airtport serving Rio de Janeiro (it's the country's second busiest airport), and landed in Congonhas at 8:30pm again. FOR THE PERFECT VIEW: Be sure to sit at the right hand side ( flight direction) of the airplane if you are landing in Santos Dumont! The aircraft passes by the Christ statue and in front of the Sugarloaf, then turning left for landing. (Unfortunately, at the day of our arrival it was quite cloudy and we were sitting at the aisle. But I hope that YOU get to see all of this ;) ) Como o nosso hotel em São Paulo situa-se a uma distância mais longíqua do aeroporto de Guarulhos, os meus colegas Stefan, Tamara e eu decidimos apanhar o voo para Rio de Janeiro a partir de Congonhas, apenas 20 minutos de carro. From Copacabana to Cosme Velho Our hotel was located right in front of the Copacabana beach (Hotel Debret, with the BEST panoramic view from the breakfast room!), and after checking- in and getting ready, we got on the Bus 583 heading to Cosme Velho bus stop. The ride takes about 30 minutes. There are three ways to get to Christ the Redeemer statue: by a funicular ride (TREM DO CORCOVADO, click here to check the prices; and don't forget to check the time tables, my friends and I would have waited one hour until the next ascent. You will pass by the Tijuca forest and then 223 steps will lead you to the statue), a bus ride which costs 40 Reais per person, or even a taxi ride. We chose the taxi ride, which was faster and cheaper. If you take the bus or taxi: you will reach the PAINEIRAS station first and then you will have to take another bus ride to arrive at the statue. The tickets can be bought ONLINE aswell. Cristo Redentor This statue is more than a symbol of Christianity across the world. It has become an icon of Rio de Janeiro and Brasil and in 2007 it was elected as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It has a height of 38 metres and weighs more than 600 tons, one finger of the statue is almost the size of a person. There are mats on the floor for you to lay down and take snapshots from another perspective. Standing on top of the Corcovado mountain, with the sun shining behind the Cristo Redentor, I had the feeling that time stood still. Although it is a crowded attraction, I found myself in a peaceful and quiet place, only the birds singing broke the silence. And the view over the marvellous city is simply stunning! It was very cloudy but it didn't matter, for it turned it into a mystic scenario. Ascend the Sugarloaf On the next day in the morning we went up to the peak of the Pão de Açúcar, Sugarloaf. The taxi driver left us right at the Bondinho (cable car) ground station at the base of Morro da Babilônia. (Here's the web page with all the information you need) It has an altitude of 396m and the name of Pão de Açúcar ( Sugarloaf) was given by the Portuguese, during the trade era with Brazil in the 16th century, due to its resemblance of the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar. Before arriving at the Sugarloaf Mountain the passengers first descend at Morro da Urca, 220m, which provides splendid views over Guanabara Bay (where you can observe the fantastic aircraft' landings on Santos Dumont airport), over Tijuca forest, the Christ the Redeemer statue and much more. There is also the possibility to go for a helicopter ride around Rio, departing from Morro da Urca. Definitely worth a visit! I bet that it might be even more magical during sunrise or sunset... Escadaría Selarón Snoop Dogg and Pharell Williams sat on these stairs for their music video of "Beautiful". I could hear that song as soon we arrived there. I have never seen anything more colorful and creative! It was back in 1990 when Jorge Selarón, a painter born in Chile, began working on the steps that ran along the front of his house. Using green, yellow and blue tiles (the colors of the Brazilian flag) that he collected from construction sites and urban waste areas he brought that street back to life, and his neighbours soon took the initiative to help him by collecting tiles from all over the world (most of the 215 steps are covered with tiles from other nations!). The steps connect Santa Teresa to Lapa district, where Samba was born. They say that it's best to come here in the evening, when bars and restaurants light up the neighbourhood with local music. Ipanema and Copacabana You have plenty of options on where to spend a great beach day. But the beautiful Ipanema, which became very popular since Vinicius Moraes and Tom Jobim composed the song "Garota de Ipanema" , is much more crowded (robberies happen in higher frequency!). Anyway, there are great restaurants and bars. In Copacabana you will find many hand craft markets, havaianas and is perfect to admire the Sugarloaf Mountain. The beach is more like a backyard for the Brazilians. Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Fitness stations, Bike ways , you will find many recreation activities outdoors! And what else can I say, I am a beach lover! I believe we all need some VITAMIN SEA... ;) Rio de Janeiro is much more than what we hear and see on television. I am surely visitting the city again in the future, I still have some stuff to do on my bucket list: - Parque Lage (where Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful" music video was recorded) - Rodrigo das Freitas Lagoon - Hiking the Tijuca forest - Go on a helicopter ride ... We have travelled a lot by taxi since we didn't had much time left and it wasn't that expensive for us three. But the bus is obviously a good and cheaper way to move around the city. Concerning restaurants, there are so many offering great dishes! Just follow your instinct :) And do also follow the music, for that will lead you to bars with live music players. They are everywhere! If you have any questions, just comment below! I am also thankful for new inputs! The preparations for the hottest event of the year have begun. Where are you celebrating Carnival? ;) Fica bem, Lili Photo taken at restaurant "Garota de Ipanema" in Ipanema:
- On the right, "Bacalhau à Gomes Sá" (Cod fish "Gomes Sá style") - My dish: Chicken breast with palmitos (palm hearts)
